Neural stem cell research at University Hospital Bonn
Due to continuously increasing life expectancy, the incidence of age-related neurodegenerative diseases is also steadily increasing. Stem cell-based technologies offer the potential for new therapies that can stop the degeneration process and repair tissue damage.
Due to continuously increasing life expectancy, the incidence of age-related neurodegenerative diseases is also steadily increasing. Stem cell-based technologies offer the potential for new therapies that can stop the degeneration process and repair tissue damage. For this reason, University Hospital Bonn focused on the use of stem cells at an early stage. Particularly in the neurosciences, scientists in Bonn hope that by using stem cells and modelling the developmental process of diseases they will be able to develop test systems for new active substances and in some cases reconstruct damaged tissue in the brain. Through the combination of funding programmes such as the European Regional Development Fund (NRW ERDF funding), the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (Horizon 2020), national funding programmes and funding from foundations, it was possible to significantly advance the realisation of these visions.
